Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:
a. advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.
b. address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.
c. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.
d. develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and collaboration tools.
The online site, Quia, has allowed me to provide a safe environment for my students to review important information in preparation for quizzes and tests.
All students on the team have access to this site making for an equitable resource for all students. They are encouraged to visit this site during study hall or at home. Directions on how to access the site are kept on the team website and on the homework pages.
Activities are fun and motivating. Many activities give the students a choice of how they want to practice: matching, flash cards, a game, etc. This allows them to focus on individual learning preferences.
I can access important information that lets me know if students are using the resources. I can even include surveys for students to communicate their review preferences.
I can get individualized information from each student showing whether they used the resource and how long they spent practicing.
I really struggled to find an example to go with this standard. Although I feel that I promote legal and ethical behavior in professional practices, it is hard to find a clear artifact to demonstrate this. Whenever the students research, we teach them to cite their sources and techniques to avoid plagiarism. Overall, what I struggle with in this standard is knowing personally what all the legal and ethical requirements are for technology use. What I would like to know more about is the responsibility I have when using pictures off the Internet, music in my PowerPoints and so on. I hope to improve my awareness and use of responsible technology practices through knowledge gained in my Master’s courses.
The activity I chose matches most closely with Indicator B. This category focuses on addressing the diverse needs of all learners using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources. I came across the Quia site last year and requested for it to be purchased using special education funds. From the previous year's experience, I felt like this program would be very beneficial to students with learning disabilities because they often need more practice and review than their peers. My teaching schedule does not allow me to have small group resource time with my students, so I wanted to make sure that they had an outlet for getting the necessary practice that they needed.
After co-teaching for many years, I also recognize that many students, even those without IEPs, need access to multiple formats to gain understanding. This is just one of the many resources all students on the team can use to enhance their learning. No student is required to use Quia, but they all are given access to use it if they feel it will help. To encourage them in their use of the site, I note the extra effort they give by randomly giving out rewards for students who use Quia. Sometimes it is the first one to use the newest review activity. Other times it is the student who practices the longest and so on. The students really enjoy it when I recognize them, and those that use the resource tend to do well on the tests.
To improve upon my mastery of this standard, I would like to explore learning all the expectations as far as copyright, intellectual property and proper documentation of sources. I would also like to explore possibly being connected to a class in another culture. This would be a really neat way to promote cultural understanding and global awareness in my students. The communication they have with someone from another culture will allow them to find the similarities between them and enhance their writing and communication skills in the process.
